SESSION 1:
ISSUES IN THE BANKING SECTOR POST-ASIAN
FINANCIAL CRISIS AND POST-ENRON

In the recent years, two events have dominated news in the banking sector. The first was the financial crisis that started in Bangkok in mid-1977 and quickly spread throughout Asia, and even beyond. The second was the disclosures of possible financial impropriety in a number of very large companies, starting with the Enron case and the latest being Italy’s Permalat case. These events have had far ranging implications on the banking sector and indeed on the financial system in general.
